Hilton Head Macula & Retina is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging, laser, and treatment equipment including the Optos wide-angle 200Tx digital imaging system (exclusive in South Carolina), the PASCAL Streamline 532 Scanning Laser system with eye tracking technology (exclusive in South Carolina). The retina specialist office is located on Hilton Head Island at 15 A Lafayette Place, near the Indigo Run entrance.
A Leader in Retina and Macula
Dr. Liggett is a leader in the evaluation and treatment of macula and retina diseases. He is an expert on the evaluation and treatment of intraocular tumors. He was the founder and president of New England Retina Associates until August of 2013. Dr. Liggett is a nationally renowned educator who is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at both Yale School of Medicine and the Cornell Weill College of Medicine in New York. He taught at Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University and the Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California. Dr. Liggett was a principal investigator on the National Institute of Health Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study.
Dr. Liggett received his medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his internal medicine and ophthalmology residencies at Cornell University Medical Center in New York City, and his vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the University of Southern California with Steve Ryan. He is board certified in both ophthalmology and internal medicine.
Additionally, Dr. Liggett is the only retina specialist in South Carolina who is a member of all three of the peer invitation-only societies: the Retina Society, the Macula Society, the Jules Gonin Society (the international society for retinal diseases) and the American Uveitis Society. He has received numerous grants and awards and has written more than 75 articles and chapters in peer-reviewed literature. He has written four major textbooks on diseases of the macula and retina. He is an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Liggett was a principal investigator in the National Eye Institute’s National Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study and the Silicone Oil Study for Complicated Retinal Detachments. He is listed in the peer-compiled book, “Best Doctors in America.”
Jennifer Bezy joined the staff of Hilton Head Macula & Retina last year. A registered nurse for 32 years, she especially enjoys education and helping patients improve their quality of life. She and her husband, Tony, enjoy time outdoors in the beautiful Lowcountry, and their 3 boys.
Jessica Critelli is a Texas native, who moved to Bluffton after serving 6 years as a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy. After serving two deployments, Critelli earned her BSN from the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Now continuing her passion for helping others, she has worked as a registered nurse in both inpatient and long-term care settings. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, bike riding, and walking with her family and two dogs.
